PEAK NUTRITION
TEA: THE DIVINE MEDICINE

Tea has always been the favorite health beverage of qigong practitioners, athletes, and Chinese doctors. According to Chinese medicine, tea clears the mind, circulates the qi, and strengthens the internal organs. Scientists have found positive immune-enhancing and cardiovascular effects for all kinds of tea. All teas come from the same plant, camellia sinensis.

There are five kinds of tea:

  • White Tea: the lightest tea, made from downy buds
  • Green Tea: the natural leaf, green and refreshing
  • Oolong Tea: a beautiful reddish-green slightly oxidized leaf, with subtle hues of flavor
  • Black Tea: fully oxidized, red leaf with robust flavor-- a more stimulating beverage
  • Pu Erh: an older varietal, big leaf black tea, with earthy tones

Interesting Tea Facts:

  • Tea contains a chemical that inhibits tumor growth. The National Cancer Institute has published articles on the cancer-preventive effects of tea.
  • Research shows that tea lowers cholesterol and normalizes blood sugar.
  • Tea is anti-bacterial and helps prevent cavities.
  • Tea is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-aging medicine (200X more potent than vitamin E).
  • Tea is low in caffeine-like chemicals; green tea has approximately 1/5 the stimulant of coffee.
  • Tea has an amino acid that calms the mind. If you are anxious or stressed, drink some tea and contemplate the beauty of nature. Drinking tea is meditation.

We sell only the very finest single estate teas. Unlike machine harvested commercial teas, fine teas are gathered by hand (1,000 pickings to make a half-pound), the quality of each leaf carefully checked. Our personal contacts with Chinese tea merchants and scholars gives you access to teas that are considered rare and prized in their country of origin.

A delicious beverage sometimes described as "a cup of enlightenment," tea also makes a wonderful gift. Your order includes detailed instructions about storing, preparing, and serving tea. All prices are per 1/2 lb. bag (unless otherwise noted).

RARE WHITE TEA

Imperial Silver Needle: The Emperor of China ordered that Silver Needle be cut with silk gloves and gold scissors. Some distributors still sell this tea for $2,000. + per pound. The lightest, finest, and most delicate of teas, made only from silken leaf buds and air dried. An aroma like spring orchids. $65.

EXTRAORDINARY GREENS

Tianmu Mountain: an exquisite, rare green tea from "Heaven's Eye" (Tianmu) Mountain, Zhejiang Province. The refreshing taste creates a feeling of tranquil beauty, like mountain mists drifting across a summer meadow. $45.

Jade Spiral (Bi Luo Chun): an exquisite smooth and floral green tea from Jiangsu Province, overlooking Lake Taihu. The downy leaves form delicate spirals when they are picked in early spring. As you add hot water, watch them open and unfurl, releasing their delicious flavor. $40.

Longjing (Dragon Well): the world famous green tea grown near the beautiful city of Hangzhou. Longjing is famous for its "four uniques": jade color, tea aroma, mellow flavor, and beautiful flat and smooth leaves. Has a slight astringency and the gentle feeling of the sea. Professor Cohen's favorite daily tea. $40.

Green Peony: An extraordinarily sweet, delicate green tea from Anhui Province, legendary home of many healing and martial arts (including Bagua Zhang). The hand-tied rosette of spring leaves opens into a "flower" of tea when steeped. We love to drink Green Peony Tea in a wine glass, to fully appreciate the taste and beauty of the tea. $50.

Great Peace Premium Green: A tea that pleases all of the senses. The leaves are large, dark green, and extremely light (in weight). They create a pale jade brew. The aroma is the subtle scent of spring tea fields. The taste-- Ah the taste!-- a cross between the bold flavor of Longjing and the sweetness of Jade Spiral-- the perfect balance. $35 for 1/4 lb. or $65 for two 1/4 lb. packages.

FULL-BODIED OOLONGS

South Mountain: We are pleased to offer a delicious oolong tea from the Chinese National Tea Competition. Considered a high grade tea by its (1) appearance before steeping, (2) appearance after steeping, (3) color of infusion, (4) aroma, and, of course, (5) taste. Harvested in Fujian Province. A full and deep bouquet, extremely low in caffeine. $45.

Monkey-Picked Tieh Guanyin: China's revered oolong from Fujian Province. "Monkey-picked" means "prized for flavor and rare," as though gathered by monkeys from steep cliffs. With an orchid-like flavor and aroma, Tieh Guanyin is the famous banquet tea, served with fine meals and to honor special guests. According to legend, a poor farmer devoted himself to caring for a dilapidated temple to Guanyin, Buddhist Goddess of Love. One day, Guanyin appeared in a dream and rewarded the farmer's devotion by revealing the location of a delicate tea plant. The farmer prospered. $65.

Rare Pomelo Oolong: A fine, rich oolong tea packed in a dried pomelo fruit from South China. The flavor of this tea is extraordinary-- amber spice, autumn forest, and a hint of citrus. Unlike other teas, this tea is aged like fine wine and will retain its flavor almost indefinitely. Drinking a cup a day, one "fruit" lasts months. $60.

THE BEST BLACK

New Harvest Yunan Black: If you need a delicious morning wake-up tea or want to wean friends away from coffee, this is it. We have a limited quantity of this exceptional gold-tipped black tea. Rich, smooth tones, a symphony of taste! $45.

POWERFUL PU ERH

Pu Erh: an earthy flavored large leaf tea from Western China, aged in caves. Evokes the autumn forest. Excellent to help digestion of meat or oily foods. Pu Erh is an acquired taste, like a fine single-malt Scotch. $25.

Tibetan Pu Erh: a small "brick" of high-grade compressed Pu Erh. Break off a piece and steep. From the border between Tibet and China. $25.

Note: Because we only sell fresh tea, availability and prices may vary at different times of year. If a tea is no longer available as listed, we will contact you to suggest an equally delicious substitute or to offer a tea upgrade or refund.

LONGEVITY SECRETS

PRIME ONE®:
RUSSIAN ADAPTOGENS FOR HEALTH

We are all exposed to stress--physical stress from pollution and crowding (rush hour traffic), emotional stress caused by worry about finances, terrorism, and the well-being of our children. Yet, many health problems-- including some types of high blood pressure and hormone or blood sugar imbalance-- are caused not by stress but by our reaction to it. Prime One is a Russian herbal formula that helps your body resist stress and stay healthy.

What does research show? Prime One is the culmination of 40 years research by Russia's famed scientist, Dr. Israel Brekhman, the founder of stress medicine. (Hans Selye, the pioneer of stress research in the West, developed his theories after visiting Dr. Brekhman's laboratories. Dr. Brekhman was studying the effects of adaptogenic herbs on human health and performance.) Russian experiments conducted with factory workers, astronauts, and athletes show that Prime One increases energy, improves sleep, and develops physical and mental resilience. The results of these experiments were published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

I learned about Prime One from Dr. Brekhman's personal assistant, the Director of Scientific Research for the Olympic Teams of the former Soviet Union. Until recently, Prime One was a State Secret. Russian Olympians used it to set more gold medals than any national team in Olympic history. Yet the herbs are safe and gentle, with anti-oxidant properties similar to vitamins C and E.

Prime One includes eleuthero, golden molasses, Schizandra, Rhodiola rosea, licorice root, and other natural herbs in a pleasant, non-alcoholic liquid base. Prime One is similar to the ancient longevity elixirs of Chinese Taoism, but it is backed up by modern science. Along with tea, it is the perfect dietary support to qigong practice. Your order includes research summaries (translated from Russian) and simple instructions for use. Drinking up to 2 tbs/day, this 30 fl. oz. bottle will last for one to two months. Only $45. Volume Discount: Buy 5 bottles ($225) and get a sixth free!
